Duras ’ writing career stretched during and beyond World War 2. It began with her first publication in 1943 entitled Les Impudents which she later on described as ‘very bad’ and even went to the Marguerite Duras' never-before-translated debut novel The Impudent Ones, first published in 1943, isn't a pleasant read — but it is a signpost to what she would later achieve with The Lover.

The War and La Douleur are both accessible for undergraduate students and would allow for a deeper discussion of the many complex and tragic issues associated with France during the Dark Years.
