Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome Affecting 1-2 percent of the general population, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) is a neurological condition that is a combination of Wernicke's encephalopathy and Korsakoff syndrome. WKS is often referred to as alcohol-related dementia or alcoholic dementia and is primarily caused by a lack of thiamine. Korsakoff’s disease (Korsakov’s disease) is a brain disease characterized by severe memory disorders. Occurring memory lapses usually fill those affected with invented contents (confabulations). The disease usually occurs in people who have consumed too much alcohol for years.
